Sanatsujāta–Dhṛtarāṣṭra Saṃvāda: Pramāda as Mṛtyu
Chapter 42
श्रेयांस्तु षड्विधस्त्यागस्तृतीयो दुष्करो भवेत् । तेन दुःखं तरत्येव भिन्न॑ तस्मिन् जितं कृते
śreyāṁs tu ṣaḍvidhas tyāgas tṛtīyo duṣkaro bhavet | tena duḥkhaṁ taraty eva bhinnaṁ tasmin jitaṁ kṛte ||
Sanatsujāta said: “Renunciation is of six kinds, and it is indeed a most excellent discipline. Yet the third kind is difficult to accomplish. By that renunciation a person surely crosses beyond suffering; when that is firmly achieved, it is as though all has been conquered.”
सनत्युजात उवाच
Sanatsujāta emphasizes that renunciation (tyāga) has multiple forms and is spiritually beneficial; among them, the “third” is especially difficult, yet mastering it enables one to transcend suffering and attain decisive inner victory.
In Udyoga Parva, Sanatsujāta instructs Dhṛtarāṣṭra on ethical and spiritual discipline. Here he highlights a graded teaching on renunciation, stressing that a particularly demanding form of tyāga leads to overcoming duḥkha and achieving mastery.
