Vidura-nīti: Atithi-dharma, Trust, Counsel-Secrecy, and Traits of Sustainable Rule
Udyoga Parva, Adhyāya 38
ययोश्षित्तेन वा चित्तं निभृतं निभृतेन वा । समेति प्रज्ञया प्रज्ञा तयोमैत्री न जीय॑ति
yayōḥ cittēna vā cittaṁ nibhṛtaṁ nibhṛtēna vā | samēti prajñayā prajñā tayōḥ maitrī na jīyati ||
Vidura said: When two people’s minds meet through mind—when their guarded confidences answer guarded confidences, and their understanding resonates with understanding—then the friendship between them does not wither. Such concord of inner intent and wisdom makes their bond enduring and difficult to break.
विदुर उवाच
Friendship becomes unbreakable when there is deep inner compatibility: minds understand minds, confidences are mutually honored, and wisdom recognizes wisdom. Trust and shared discernment are presented as the foundations of enduring maitrī.
In Udyoga Parva, Vidura offers counsel in a tense pre-war context, emphasizing ethical conduct and prudent relationships. Here he highlights the kind of friendship grounded in mutual trust and insight—an implicit standard for alliances and counsel amid political crisis.
