Adhyaya 32: Saṃjaya’s Return, Audience with Dhṛtarāṣṭra, and Ethical Admonition
trividhaṁ narakasyedaṁ dvāraṁ nāśanam ātmanaḥ | kāmaḥ krodhas tathā lobhas tasmād etat trayaṁ tyajet ||
Vidura declares that there are three gates leading to hell, each bringing about one’s own ruin: desire, anger, and greed. Therefore, a person should renounce these three.
विदुर उवाच
The verse teaches that desire (kāma), anger (krodha), and greed (lobha) are the primary inner forces that lead a person into moral downfall—like three ‘gates’ to hell—so one should consciously abandon and restrain them.
In Udyoga Parva, Vidura offers ethical counsel amid rising conflict, warning that uncontrolled passions corrupt judgment and push people toward adharma, thereby worsening the impending crisis.
