उद्योगपर्व — अध्याय २५: संजयदूतवाक्यम्
Sañjaya’s Envoy-Speech on Peace
kāmārthalābhena tathaiva bhūyo na tṛpyate sarpiṣevāgniriddhaḥ |
Sañjaya said: “Even after gaining objects of desire and wealth, a person is not satisfied; rather, craving grows still more—just as a blazing fire, when fed with ghee, flares up instead of being quenched. Thus indulgence and acquisition do not end thirst; they intensify it, and the mind remains unfulfilled.”

Sense-enjoyment and material gain do not extinguish craving; they fuel it. True relief from suffering comes from freedom from obsessive sense-oriented thinking and the cultivation of contentment and restraint.
In the Udyoga Parva’s counsel-oriented context, Sañjaya conveys a moral reflection to the royal audience: the pursuit of kāma and artha tends to intensify desire, illustrated by the image of a blazing fire that grows stronger when ghee is poured into it.
