Vaiśampāyana said: The Pāṇḍava Arjuna—Savyasācī, bearer of the Gāṇḍīva bow—was the very one who, in the Khāṇḍava forest, overcame the gods even with Indra among them. Seeking to increase the fame and honor of the Pāṇḍavas, he offered that forest as an oblation-gift to Agni (Jātavedas).

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how extraordinary prowess, when directed toward a collective purpose, becomes a means of increasing a community’s honor. Arjuna’s deed is framed not as private glory but as an act that elevates the Pāṇḍavas’ standing, linking valor with responsibility and reputation.

Vaiśampāyana identifies Arjuna by recalling the famous Khāṇḍava episode: Arjuna, wielding the Gāṇḍīva, fought off the gods including Indra and enabled Agni (Jātavedas) to consume the Khāṇḍava forest, thereby enhancing the Pāṇḍavas’ fame.
