Bhishma’s Account of Parashurama’s Challenge and the March to Kurukshetra
अभिषातप्रभावाच्च पावक: समजायत | उस समय वायुके कम्पन और सूर्यकी किरणोंसे समस्त बाण परस्पर टकराने लगे। उनकी रगड़से वहाँ आग प्रकट हो गयी
abhiṣātaprabhāvāc ca pāvakaḥ samajāyata |
Bhīṣma said: “And due to the force of the striking and friction, fire arose.” At that time, stirred by the wind’s vibration and the sun’s rays, all the arrows collided with one another, and from their rubbing a blaze appeared there.
भीष्म उवाच
The verse underscores how violence multiplies: when aggression meets aggression, the very collision produces further harm—symbolized by fire arising from impact—suggesting the ethical warning that conflict tends to escalate beyond intention.
Bhīṣma describes a battle-like scene where, through the force of repeated strikes (and implied friction/collision), fire manifests—an image of the battlefield’s intensity and the destructive chain-reaction of clashing weapons.
