Bhishma’s Account of Parashurama’s Challenge and the March to Kurukshetra
तत एनं परिष्वज्य शनैराश्वासयंस्तदा । पाणिभिर्जलशीतैश्न जयाशीर्भिक्ष कौरव
tata enaṁ pariṣvajya śanair āśvāsayaṁs tadā | pāṇibhir jalaśītaiś ca jaya-āśīrbhiḥ kṣa kṣa kṣa kaurava ||
Then, embracing him, they gently consoled him. With hands cooled by water, they soothed him and sprinkled him with refreshing water, offering blessings that signified victory—addressing him as a Kaurava, the delight of the Kuru line.
भीष्म उवाच
In moments of shock or grief, dharma is expressed through compassionate presence—embracing, calming speech, and auspicious blessings—rather than harshness or indifference.
Those present physically comfort a distressed person: they embrace him, soothe him gradually, cool him with water, and speak victory-blessings, addressing him respectfully as a Kaurava and ‘Kuru-nandana’.
