Udyoga Parva Adhyāya 132 — Vidura’s Counsel on Udyama, Yaśas, and Kṣātra-Dharma
अमात्यानामथो हर्षमादधात्यचिरेण स:,जो अपने प्रिय और सुखका परित्याग करके सम्पत्तिका अन्वेषण करता है, वह शीघ्र ही अपने मन्त्रियोंका हर्ष बढ़ाता है
amātyānām atho harṣam ādadhāty acireṇa saḥ |
Vāyu said: “He who, setting aside his own comforts and dear pleasures, applies himself to the pursuit of wealth and resources, quickly increases the joy and confidence of his ministers—showing that a ruler’s self-restraint and diligence strengthen the morale of those who serve the state.”
वायुदेव उवाच
A ruler (or leader) who renounces personal indulgence and works diligently to secure resources for the common good inspires and heartens his ministers; disciplined effort at the top generates morale and loyalty in governance.
Vāyudeva is speaking a maxim of rājadharma: he describes how a leader’s prompt, self-sacrificing pursuit of prosperity strengthens the happiness and confidence of the ministerial circle, emphasizing effective administration through personal restraint.
