Udyoga-parva Adhyāya 130: Kuntī’s Instruction on Rājadharma and Daṇḍanīti
संजयं च महाभागमृषींश्षैव तपोधनान् । प्रादात् तेषां स भगवान् दिव्यं चक्षुर्जनार्दन:
sañjayaṃ ca mahābhāgam ṛṣīṃś caiva tapodhanān | prādāt teṣāṃ sa bhagavān divyaṃ cakṣur janārdanaḥ ||
Vaiśampāyana said: The Blessed Lord Janārdana granted divine sight to the illustrious Sañjaya and to the sages rich in austerity. By that gift alone they were able to behold the Lord’s formidable, radiant manifestation—while others, overwhelmed by fear, could not keep their eyes open. The episode underscores that true perception of the divine and of dharma in moments of crisis depends not merely on physical vision, but on inner fitness and grace.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Spiritual and ethical discernment in decisive moments is not merely sensory; it requires inner preparedness (tapas, purity, steadiness) and, ultimately, divine grace. Those endowed with such fitness are enabled to perceive what overwhelms ordinary perception.
Vaiśampāyana narrates that Kṛṣṇa (Janārdana) bestows divine sight upon Sañjaya and austere sages so they can behold His extraordinary, terrifyingly radiant manifestation—while others are unable to look upon it.
