निगृहा सुहृदां मन्युं शाधि राज्यं यथोचितम् । स्वमंशं पाण्डुपुत्रेभ्य: प्रदाय भरतर्षभ
nigṛhā suhṛdāṁ manyuṁ śādhi rājyaṁ yathocitam | svam aṁśaṁ pāṇḍuputrebhyaḥ pradāya bharatarṣabha ||
Vaiśaṃpāyana said: “Restrain the anger of your well-wishing elders and allies, and govern the kingdom in the manner that is proper. O bull among the Bharatas, grant the Pāṇḍava sons of Pāṇḍu their rightful share.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
A ruler should master anger—especially the collective wrath of supporters—and govern according to propriety (dharma). Justice requires granting others their due share, since rightful distribution prevents moral decline and political catastrophe.
In the Udyoga Parva’s tense pre-war context, counsel is voiced urging the Kuru ruler to restrain factional anger and avert conflict by giving the Pāṇḍavas their legitimate portion of the kingdom.
