नारदकथितं माधव्याः तपश्चर्या–ययातेः स्वर्गविचारः | Nārada on Mādhavī’s Asceticism and the Scrutiny of Yayāti in Heaven
nārada uvāca—tataḥ vinatānandanaḥ garuḍaḥ gālavaṃ muniṃ hasan uvāca—“brāhman! mahāsaubhāgyasya viṣayaḥ, yat adya tvāṃ iha kṛtakṛtyaṃ paśyāmi.” gālavaḥ tu vainateyena bhāṣitaṃ vacaḥ śrutvā tad asya kāryaṃ ācacakṣe—“gurudakṣiṇāyāḥ caturthabhāgaḥ adyāpi avaśiṣṭaḥ; taṃ śīghraṃ pūrayitavyaṃ.”
Nārada said: Then Garuḍa, the son of Vinatā, smiling, spoke to the sage Gālava: “O brāhmaṇa, it is truly a matter of great good fortune that today I see you here with your task nearly fulfilled.” Hearing Garuḍa’s words, Gālava replied by stating what still remained to be done: “One quarter of the teacher’s fee is still left; it must be completed without delay.”
नारद उवाच
The verse highlights dharma as faithful completion of one’s obligation—especially the gurudakṣiṇā—without complacency. Even when most of the task is done, integrity requires finishing the remaining portion promptly.
Garuḍa, pleased, tells Gālava that it is fortunate to see him nearly successful. Gālava answers that one quarter of the required gurudakṣiṇā still remains and must be completed quickly.
