Gāndhārī’s Lament and the Identification of Duḥśāsana
anyāṁ cāpahṛtaṁ kāyāc cārukuṇḍalam unnasaṁ | sva-stha-bandhoḥ śiraḥ kṛṣṇa gṛhītvā paśya tiṣṭhatīm ||
Vaiśampāyana said: “And see another woman standing there, O Kṛṣṇa, holding a severed head taken from its body—adorned with lovely earrings and marked by a high, well-shaped nose—belonging to one of her own close kin. The scene lays bare the moral wreckage of war: even the bonds of family are reduced to tokens of grief, and the battlefield’s violence follows the living into their mourning.”
