Vaiśampāyana said: When all the armies had been slain, Dharma-king Yudhiṣṭhira heard that his aged uncle Dhṛtarāṣṭra was setting out from Hastināpura—Gajasāhvaya—to perform the last rites for the warriors fallen in battle. Hearing this, Yudhiṣṭhira, burdened by grief and moral anguish, went with his brothers to meet the sorrow-stricken king.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Even after victory, dharma demands responsibility toward the dead and compassion toward the grieving; the aftermath of war calls for restraint, reconciliation, and the performance of necessary rites rather than triumphalism.
After the total destruction of the armies, Yudhiṣṭhira learns that the aged Dhṛtarāṣṭra is departing from Hastināpura to conduct funerary rites for the slain, and Yudhiṣṭhira goes with his brothers to meet him amid shared sorrow.
