Rules for Dharmic Victory in Kṣatriya Engagement
dharmeṇa nidhanaṃ śreyo na jayaḥ pāpakarmaṇā |
Bhīṣma teaches that it is better to meet death while standing on dharma than to win through sinful deeds. Victory gained by wrongdoing is the way of the wicked; a truly noble person should seek triumph—even over the wicked—only by righteous means. Thus, dying in a dharma-guided battle is preferable to securing success through immoral action.
The verse teaches that moral integrity (dharma) must govern one’s means: death attained through righteousness is preferable to victory achieved through sinful conduct, since true nobility refuses unethical success.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction on dharma and governance, Bhishma advises the listener that even in conflict a righteous person should pursue victory only through dharmic methods, rejecting triumph obtained by wrongdoing.
