Bhishma offers a hymn of reverence to the Supreme Lord, the maker and inner Self of the universe. He salutes the One who pervades the three worlds, who also transcends them, and who is present in every direction. The Lord is praised as the inexhaustible treasury in whom all things are contained—beyond the five elements and identical with the liberating Brahman sought by all beings.
भीष्म उवाच
The verse teaches a vision of the Supreme as both immanent and transcendent: present throughout the three worlds and all directions, yet also beyond the three worlds. It frames God/Brahman as the all-containing repository and as the liberating reality (mokṣa-svarūpa) sought by beings.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction setting, Bhishma speaks in a devotional register, offering salutations and praise to the Supreme Lord. The verse functions as a stotra-like affirmation of the Lord’s cosmic pervasion and supremacy within Bhishma’s broader discourse on dharma and ultimate good.
