Service to Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Allocation of State Duties
द्विजानां देवकार्येषु का्येष्वन्येषु चैव ह । धौम्यं पुरोधसां श्रेष्ठ नित्यमेव समादिशत्
Vaiśampāyana uvāca |
Dvijānāṃ devakāryeṣu kāryeṣv anyeṣu caiva ha |
Dhaumyaṃ purodhasāṃ śreṣṭhaṃ nityam eva samādiśat ||
Vaiśampāyana said: For the Brahmins, in matters pertaining to the gods and in other duties as well, Dhaumya—foremost among household priests—was appointed and continually enjoined to preside.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
That dharma in ritual and social life is safeguarded by entrusting sacred and Brahminical duties to a competent and exemplary purohita; proper authority and qualification sustain religious order.
The narrator states that Dhaumya, regarded as the foremost among priests, was appointed to oversee and direct divine rites and other Brahmin-appropriate obligations on an ongoing basis.
