Prāyaścitta-vidhāna: Tapas, Dāna, Vrata, and Proportional Expiation (प्रायश्चित्तविधानम्)

ऊर्ध्व भवति संदेहादिह दृष्टार्थमेव च । अपेक्षापूर्वकरणात् प्रायश्षित्तं विधीयते
Translation
Here a doubt arises, and also in regard to a benefit plainly seen in this world. Because an inauspicious act is done deliberately and with prior consideration, expiation (prāyaścitta) is prescribed for the removal of its fault.
