भीष्म उवाच ततस्तेन कृतातिथ्य: सो$तिथि: शत्रुसूदन | उवास किल तां रात्रि सह तेन द्विजेन वै,भीष्मजी कहते हैं--शत्रुसूदन! तदनन्तर वह अतिथि उस ब्राह्मणका आतिथ्य ग्रहण करके रातभर वहीं उस ब्राह्मणके साथ रहा
bhīṣma uvāca | tatastena kṛtātithyaḥ so 'tithiḥ śatrusūdana | uvāsa kila tāṃ rātriṃ saha tena dvijena vai ||
Bhishma said: “Then, O slayer of foes, that guest—having accepted the hospitality (atithi-satkāra) offered by him—indeed spent that night there together with that brahmin.”
भीष्म उवाच
The verse highlights atithi-dharma: honouring a guest and the guest’s acceptance of that hospitality are both ethically significant, creating a relationship grounded in trust, propriety, and righteous social conduct.
After being properly received by a brahmin, the guest accepts the hospitality and stays the entire night there, remaining in the brahmin’s company.
