Atithi-satkāra and the Consolation of Wise Counsel

“Nārāyaṇa, the all-pervading Self of the universe, seized Rudra by the throat when Rudra rushed to attack the sages engaged in austerities. Because his throat became dark-blue from that grasp, Rudra thereafter became renowned by the epithet ‘Nīlakaṇṭha’ (the Blue-throated One).”

Educational Q&A

Dharma includes safeguarding those devoted to spiritual discipline (tapas) and curbing destructive power when it turns against the innocent. Even formidable divine force (Rudra) is shown as subject to the higher order upheld by the universal Self (Nārāyaṇa).

Rudra, in a fierce surge, attacks sages absorbed in austerities. Nārāyaṇa intervenes, seizes Rudra by the throat, and the resulting dark-blue throat becomes the etiological reason for Rudra’s epithet “Nīlakaṇṭha.”
