Atithi-prāpti and the Brāhmaṇa’s Deliberation on Triadic Dharma (अतिथिप्राप्तिः धर्मत्रयविचारश्च)
Vaiśampāyana uvāca: kalpayiṣyanti vo bhāgāṁs te narā vedakalpitān | "devagaṇa! sampūrṇa-lokeṣu ye manuṣyā yajñair yajiṣyanti, te yuṣmad-artham vedokta-vidhinā yajñabhāgān niśceṣyanti" | yo me yathā kalpitavān bhāgam asmin mahākratau
“Those men will apportion for you your shares, as laid down by the Veda. O host of gods, throughout the worlds, the humans who worship by means of sacrifices will, for your sake, determine the sacrificial portions exactly in accordance with Vedic ordinance. (And the thought continues:) ‘Whoever has assigned my share in this great sacrifice in such-and-such a manner…’”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
That sacrificial offerings and the deities’ portions are not arbitrary: they are to be fixed according to Vedic injunction, upholding dharma and the ordered reciprocity between humans and gods.
Vaiśampāyana reports a statement addressed to the gods: humans across the worlds will continue performing sacrifices and will assign the gods their due portions as the Veda prescribes; the passage then transitions into a continuation about how a particular share was assigned in a great sacrifice.
