Adhyāya 325: Nārada in Śvetadvīpa—Stotra to the Nirguṇa Mahātman

Bhishma said: In the middle of the night, the venerable one accepted sleep in the proper measure. Yet Shuka first washed his hands and feet and performed the twilight worship (sandhyā-upāsanā). Then, seated on a purified seat, he turned his mind solely to the principle of liberation. During the first watch of the night he remained absorbed in meditation; thereafter, in the middle portion of the night (the second and third watches), the powerful Shuka accepted sleep as was fitting.

That a disciplined life orders actions by dharma: purification and worship are performed first, contemplation of liberation is prioritized, and even sleep is taken only in a measured, appropriate way.
Bhishma describes Shuka’s nightly routine: he washes, performs sandhya worship, sits on a purified seat to contemplate moksha, meditates through the first watch, and then accepts sleep during the middle watches of the night.
