Bhishma said: “When a person’s inner self becomes entangled with harmful impulses, the mind settles into sin. Then, having performed tainted deeds, that person is plunged into great suffering.”
Bhishma teaches that moral downfall begins internally: when the self is allied with destructive impulses, the mind gravitates toward wrongdoing; impure actions follow, and suffering becomes inevitable.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction section, Bhishma is advising the king on ethical governance and personal discipline, explaining the causal chain from inner disorder to sinful action and resulting distress.
