The Haṃsa said: “O you who seek the deathless (immortality), I have heard that these are the highest disciplines to be undertaken—ascetic effort, restraint of the senses, truthfulness, and vigilant self-guarding. Having loosened every knot of the heart, one should bring both the pleasant and the unpleasant under one’s control—so that neither delight nor grief rules the mind.”

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches inner mastery: cultivate tapas (disciplined effort), dama (sense-restraint), satya (truthfulness), and vigilant self-guarding, and untie the heart’s knots of attachment so that pleasure and pain no longer dominate one’s responses.

Haṃsa, speaking as a spiritual instructor, addresses seekers of the deathless and summarizes the practical disciplines that lead toward liberation: ethical truth, restraint, austerity, and detachment from emotional reactivity to what is liked or disliked.
