Janaka–Parāśara: Varṇa, Gotra, and Dharma Inquiry

Lack of thriving and wretchedness, bewilderment, dreamlike stupor and drowsiness—these are the many forms in which tamas (darkness and inertia) moves about. If in any way ignorance, craving, delusion, heedlessness, numb rigidity, fear, poverty, abasement, fainting confusion, dreams, sleep, and sloth come to surround one, they should be known as nothing but the diverse manifestations of tamas.
