Bhīṣma said: One should strive only for what sustains life—mere subsistence—and remain indifferent to obtaining more than that. If alms are not obtained, one should not be cast down by distress; and if they are obtained, one should not be elated by joy. Thus the disciplined person maintains equanimity, free from dependence on gain and loss.
भीष्म उवाच
To seek only minimal sustenance and remain even-minded: do not grieve when necessities are not obtained, and do not exult when they are obtained. This cultivates freedom from dependence on external gain.
In the Śānti Parva’s instruction on dharma, Bhīṣma continues advising on disciplined living, emphasizing restraint and inner steadiness in the face of receiving or not receiving food/alms.
