Adhyāya 270 — Yudhiṣṭhira’s inquiry on saṃnyāsa; Bhīṣma on calculable time, tamas, and karma
Vṛtra–Uśanā exemplum begins
ततो धूपैश्न गन्धेश्न माल्यैरुच्चावचैरपि | बलिभिविंविधाभिश्न पूजयामास तं द्विज:,तब ब्राह्मणने धूप, गन्ध, छोटे-बड़े माल्य तथा भाँति-भाँतिके पूजोपहार अर्पित करके कुण्डधार मेघका पूजन किया
tato dhūpaiś ca gandhaiś ca mālyair uccāvacair api | balibhir vividhābhiś ca pūjayāmāsa taṃ dvijaḥ ||
Then the brāhmaṇa worshipped that revered one by offering incense and fragrances, garlands of various kinds, and diverse ritual oblations.
भीष्म उवाच
Dharma is expressed through respectful honoring of the worthy—worship conducted with appropriate offerings (incense, fragrance, garlands, bali) reflects humility, gratitude, and right conduct.
A brāhmaṇa performs pūjā for a revered figure, presenting incense, perfumes, garlands of different kinds, and various ritual offerings, indicating a formal act of veneration.
