चिरं धारयते रोषं चिरं कर्म नियच्छति । पश्चात्तापकरं कर्म न किंचिदुपपद्यते
ciraṁ dhārayate roṣaṁ ciraṁ karma niyacchati | paścāttāpakaraṁ karma na kiṁcid upapadyate ||
Bhishma said: “One who can hold back anger for a long time, and for a long time restrains actions that would be done in anger—no deed arises from him that later becomes a cause of remorse.”
भीष्म उवाच
Sustained restraint of anger and the actions prompted by it prevents regretful, harmful deeds; self-control is presented as a practical foundation of dharma.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction on righteous conduct, Bhishma advises the listener that mastering anger—by containing it and delaying anger-driven action—ensures one does not commit acts that later demand repentance.
