पापात्म-धर्मात्म-लक्षणम् तथा निर्वेदेन मोक्षमार्गः | Marks of the Sinful and the Righteous; Dispassion (Nirveda) as a Path to Liberation
स मया सान्त्वितो वाग्भि: स्वागतेनाभिपूजित: । अर्घ्य॑ पाद्यं यथान्यायं मया च प्रतिपादित:
sa mayā sāntvito vāgbhiḥ svāgatenābhipūjitaḥ | arghya-pādyaṃ yathānyāyaṃ mayā ca pratipāditaḥ ||
Bhīṣma said: “I soothed him with gentle words and honored him with a proper welcome. In accordance with the prescribed custom, I offered him arghya and pādya and personally performed the due rites of reverential worship.”
भीष्म उवाच
The verse upholds atithi-dharma: a householder should receive a guest with soothing speech, respectful welcome, and the customary offerings (arghya, pādya) performed according to proper rule.
Bhīṣma narrates how he received an honored visitor: he reassured him with kind words, welcomed him, and formally offered arghya and pādya as part of the prescribed ritual of guest-reception.
