Kapila and Syūmaraśmi on Renunciation, Householder Support, and Epistemic Authority
ऋषयस्ते महाभागा: प्रजास्वेव हि जाजले । भ्रूणहं नहुषं त्वाहुर्न ते होष्पामहे हवि:
ṛṣayaste mahābhāgāḥ prajāsveva hi jājale | bhrūṇahaṃ nahuṣaṃ tvāhur na te hoṣpāmahe haviḥ ||
“O fortunate one, those sages were indeed kindled with anger over the people. They declare you to be a slayer of a brahmin-embryo, a ‘Nahuṣa’ in guilt; therefore we will not offer oblations (havis) for you.”
तुलाधार उवाच
Grave moral transgressions—especially those harming the innocent and violating brahminical life—destroy ritual eligibility and social trust; dharma requires purity of conduct, not merely status, and community rites may be withheld from the culpable.
Tūlādhāra reports that sages, angered on behalf of the people, brand the addressed person with the stigma of bhrūṇahatyā and liken him to ‘Nahuṣa’ in defilement; as a consequence, they refuse to perform sacrificial offerings (havis) for him.
