Bhīṣma said: Recalling how sparrows had come to nest and multiply upon his very head, Jājali—foremost among those devoted to japa—grew self-satisfied, imagining himself a great upholder of dharma. As if clapping his hands in the sky, he proclaimed aloud, “Truly, I have attained dharma.”

External signs of austerity or unusual occurrences (like birds nesting on an ascetic) can inflate ego; true dharma requires inner humility and right understanding, not self-congratulation.
Bhīṣma narrates that the ascetic Jājali, remembering sparrows nesting and thriving on his head, takes it as proof of his sanctity and publicly declares that he has attained dharma.
