Kapila–Cow Dialogue: Authority of Householder and Renunciant Dharmas
कदाचिद् दिवसान् पज्च समुत्पत्य विहड्भमा: । षछ्ेडहनि समाजम्मुर्न चाकम्पत जाजलि:,कभी-कभी वे विहंगम उड़कर पाँच-पाँच दिनतक बाहर ही रह जाते और छठे दिन वहाँ लौटते थे, तबतक भी जाजलि मुनि हिले-डुले नहीं
kadācid divasān pañca samutpatya vihaṅgamāḥ | ṣaṣṭhe 'hani samāgamya na cākampata jājaliḥ ||
Bhīṣma said: “At times the birds would take flight and remain away for as long as five days. When they returned there on the sixth day, the sage Jājali still did not stir in the least—showing unwavering steadiness and disciplined endurance in his practice.”
भीष्म उवाच
The verse highlights unwavering steadiness (acalatā) in tapas: even when circumstances change over several days, the disciplined person remains unmoved, illustrating self-mastery and endurance as ethical strengths.
Birds that had been present fly away and stay out for five days; when they return on the sixth day, the sage Jājali has not shifted at all, emphasizing his intense, continuous austerity.
