Ātma-saṃyama-dharma: One-pointedness of Mind and Senses (शुक–व्यास संवादः)
स एवं गुरवे प्रीतिमुपहत्य यथाबलम्
sa evaṁ gurave prītim upahatya yathābalam
Thus, to the best of his ability, he offered and presented his affectionate devotion to his teacher, seeking to please him through fitting acts of respect and service.
व्यास उवाच
One should honor the teacher with sincere goodwill and appropriate service, giving according to one’s capacity (yathābalam). Ethical merit lies in intention and fitting conduct rather than display.
The speaker describes a disciple (or subordinate) approaching his teacher and, as far as he is able, offering acts that express affection, respect, and the wish to please the guru.
