Vyāsa said: After completing the remaining duties of service, a disciple who seeks true growth should sit near the teacher and study. He should be generous in conduct and never cast blame or slander upon anyone. When summoned, he should promptly present himself and take refuge in the teacher’s service.
व्यास उवाच
A seeker’s learning must be grounded in disciplined service: finish one’s duties, study in the teacher’s presence, maintain generosity and restraint in speech (no slander), and respond promptly when the guru calls.
In Śānti Parva’s instruction on dharma and right conduct, Vyāsa lays down practical rules for a student’s daily behavior toward the guru—service first, then study, along with moral qualities like kindness and non-slander.
