Vyāsa said: “My child, no one attains true accomplishment by any means other than learning joined with austerity, the restraint of the senses, and the complete renunciation of possessiveness. Without these disciplines, success—especially the success that purifies and liberates—does not arise.”

Educational Q&A

Lasting attainment (siddhi) is grounded in four supports: knowledge (vidyā), disciplined austerity (tapas), restraint of the senses (indriya-nigraha), and complete renunciation of attachment/possessiveness (sarva-saṃtyāga). Vyāsa denies that any alternative shortcut can replace these.

Within the instruction-heavy Shānti Parva, Vyāsa delivers a direct ethical-spiritual maxim to the listener, emphasizing inner discipline and renunciation as prerequisites for genuine success and spiritual fulfillment.
