Vyāsa said: Then the steadfast man, taking hold of the raft of true knowledge for the sake of his own inner peace, should rely on knowledge alone—whether he is rising above or sinking down amid the waves of worldly experience.

One should treat liberating knowledge (jñāna) as the sole refuge for attaining inner peace, remaining steady through both uplift and decline in worldly conditions—like holding a raft while crossing a turbulent ocean.
In the Śānti Parva’s instructional discourse, Vyāsa continues a didactic passage: he urges the listener to navigate saṁsāra’s fluctuations by grasping the ‘raft of knowledge’ and relying on discernment rather than external circumstances.
