Yudhiṣṭhira asked: “Grandfather, who on this earth is that human being who is dear to all people, who is welcomed and celebrated by every living creature, and who is endowed with all virtues?”
युधिछिर उवाच
The verse frames an ethical inquiry: the highest human ideal is one whose character (guṇa) makes him universally beloved—bringing joy to all beings and embodying comprehensive virtue, not merely power or status.
In Śānti Parva, Yudhiṣṭhira questions the elder (Bhīṣma) about the model human being—someone universally loved and praised—setting up a discourse on exemplary qualities and conduct.
