Jñāna-plava (The Raft of Knowledge): Svabhāva, Prajñā, and the Ascent to Ātmajñāna
नाप्राप्तमनुशोचन्ति प्राप्तकालानि कुर्वते । न चातीतानि शोचन्ति न चैव प्रतिजानते
na aprāptam anuśocanti prāptakālāni kurvate | na ca atītāni śocanti na ca eva pratijānate ||
Jaigiṣavya said: The wise do not grieve over what has not yet come. They act only upon the duties that have arrived in their proper time. They do not lament what has passed, and they do not bind themselves with vows and rigid promises.
जैगीषव्य उवाच
Do not waste the mind in anxiety over what has not happened or regret over what is finished; perform the duty that is presently due, without binding oneself through impulsive vows.
In Śānti Parva’s instruction on conduct and inner discipline, the speaker Jaigiṣavya describes the disposition of the wise: they stay anchored in the present duty, free from future-oriented worry and past-oriented sorrow.
