Adhyāya 199: Karma–Jñāna Causality and the Nirguṇa Brahman
Manu’s Instruction
सोद्य ब्राह्मंं तपस्तेपे संहितां संयतो जपन् । तस्य वर्षसहस््रं तु नियमेन तथा गतम्
so 'dya brāhmaṁ tapas tepe saṁhitāṁ saṁyato japan | tasya varṣa-sahasraṁ tu niyamena tathā gatam ||
Bhishma said: “Then he undertook the austere discipline proper to a brahmin, keeping his senses restrained and continuously reciting the sacred compendium with understanding of its meaning. In this way, observing strict vows and regular practice, a full thousand years passed for him in japa and tapas.”
भीष्म उवाच
True spiritual progress is grounded in disciplined restraint (saṁyama), sustained practice (japa and tapas), and study that includes understanding of meaning—not mere mechanical recitation.
Bhishma describes an ascetic undertaking brahminical austerities: controlling the senses and reciting a sacred compendium with disciplined observances, continuing this regimen for a thousand years.
