अध्याय १७८ — प्राणवायुगतिः तथा शारीराग्निव्यवस्था
Adhyāya 178 — The courses of prāṇa-vāyu and the regulation of the bodily fire
भीष्म उवाच सर्वसाम्यमनायासं सत्यवाक्यं च भारत । निर्वेदश्चाविधित्सा च यस्य स्यात् स सुखी नर:
bhīṣma uvāca sarva-sāmyam anāyāsaṃ satya-vākyaṃ ca bhārata | nirvedaś cāvidhitsā ca yasya syāt sa sukhī naraḥ ||
Bhishma said: O Bharata, that man is truly happy in whom these are found: an equal-mindedness toward all, freedom from needless exertion, truthfulness in speech, dispassion toward worldly life, and the absence of craving-driven attachment to action.
भीष्म उवाच
Happiness is grounded in inner discipline: impartiality toward all beings, avoiding pointless strain, speaking truth, becoming disenchanted with worldly compulsions, and not being driven by craving-based attachment to action.
In the Śānti Parva, Bhīṣma instructs Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma and the means to peace after the war; here he defines the qualities by which a person becomes genuinely happy.
