Doctrine of Creation from the Unmanifest ‘Mānasa’
सुखं निराश: स्वपिति नैराश्यं परमं सुखम् । आशामनाशां कृत्वा हि सुखं स्वपिति पिड़ला
sukhaṁ nirāśaḥ svapiti nairāśyaṁ paramaṁ sukham | āśām anāśāṁ kṛtvā hi sukhaṁ svapiti piḍalā ||
The Brahmin said: “One who is free from expectation sleeps happily; the absence of hope—non-attachment to outcomes—is the highest happiness. When hope is transformed into ‘no-hope,’ when craving for results is abandoned, then Piḍalā sleeps in peace.”
ब्राह्मण उवाच
Freedom from expectation (āśā) is presented as the highest happiness: when one stops depending on hoped-for outcomes, the mind becomes untroubled and naturally rests in peace.
A Brahmin speaker states a reflective maxim and points to Piḍalā as an example: by converting hope into non-hope—abandoning anxious longing—Piḍalā attains calm and sleeps happily.
