Adhyāya 174: Karma as an inescapable companion (कर्मानुगमन-उपदेश)
सम्परिष्वज्य सुद्ठदं प्रीत्या परमया युतः । राजन्! बर्तन और सुवर्ण आदि सब सामग्रीसहित प्रिय सुहृद् गौतमको पाकर बकराजने बड़े प्रेमसे उसको हृदयसे लगा लिया
sampariṣvajya su-dṛḍhaṃ prītyā paramayā yutaḥ | rājan! bhājana-suvarṇādi sarva-sāmagrī-sahitaṃ priya-suhṛdaṃ gautamaṃ prāpya bakarājo mahā-premṇā taṃ hṛdayena pariṣasvaje |
Bhīṣma said: “O King, filled with the highest affection, the king Baka embraced Gautama firmly. Having found his beloved well-wisher Gautama—together with vessels, gold, and other complete provisions—he drew him close with deep, heartfelt love.”
भीष्म उवाच
The verse highlights dharmic conduct through heartfelt hospitality and honoring a well-wisher: true respect is not merely material gifting (vessels, gold, provisions) but sincere affection and gratitude expressed through warm reception.
Bhīṣma narrates that King Baka, upon meeting his dear friend and benefactor Gautama—who is associated with valuable items and complete provisions—embraces him firmly, showing deep personal love and reverence.
