Yudhiṣṭhira said: “Bhīmasena, discontent, heedlessness, intoxicated pride, attachment, lack of inner peace, brute force, delusion, self-conceit, and agitation—these faults have entered you on every side. That is why the desire for kingship arises in you. Brother, become free: act without craving, loosen the bonds of attachment, and abide as one wholly liberated, calm, and happy.”
युधिछिर उवाच
Yudhiṣṭhira identifies inner vices—discontent, heedlessness, pride, attachment, unrest, delusion, ego, and agitation—as the roots of political craving. The ethical counsel is to abandon desire-driven action, loosen attachment, and cultivate tranquility and freedom.
In Śānti Parva, Yudhiṣṭhira counters Bhīma’s forceful, kingdom-oriented impulse. He rebukes the mental states driving Bhīma’s wish for rule and redirects him toward restraint, detachment, and the ideal of a calm, liberated life.
