बक-गौतमाख्यानम् / The Baka–Gautama Account

On Gratitude and Friendship Ethics

धुन्धुमाराच्च काम्बोजो मुचुकुन्दस्ततोडलभत्‌ | मुचुकुन्दान्मरुत्तश्न मरुत्तादपि रैवत:

dhundhumārāc ca kāmbojo mucukundas tato ’labhat | mucukundān maruttaś ca maruttād api raivataḥ ||

Bhīṣma said: From Dhundhumāra came Kāmboja; from him was born Mucukunda. From Mucukunda came Marutta, and from Marutta, in turn, Raivata. Thus the lineage is recounted to preserve the memory of righteous kings and the continuity of royal duty across generations.

Educational Q&A

The verse underscores the Itihāsa practice of preserving genealogies: remembering righteous rulers and the succession of kingship helps anchor dharma in historical continuity and models ideal royal responsibility across generations.

Bhīṣma is listing a sequence of ancestors and descendants—Dhundhumāra → Kāmboja → Mucukunda → Marutta → Raivata—within a broader genealogical account in the Śānti Parva.
