On Gratitude and Friendship Ethics
इति श्रीमहाभारते शान्तिपर्वणि आपद्धर्मपर्वणि खड्गोत्पत्तिक थने षट्षष्ट्यधिकशततमो<ध्याय:
iti śrīmahābhārate śāntiparvaṇi āpaddharmaparvaṇi khaḍgotpattikathane ṣaṭṣaṣṭyadhikaśatatamo 'dhyāyaḥ
Thus, in the Śrī Mahābhārata, within the Śānti Parva—specifically the Āpaddharma section—in the narrative concerning the origin of the sword, the one-hundred-and-sixty-sixth chapter comes to an end.
भीष्म उवाच
This line is a colophon (chapter-ending marker), not a teaching verse. Its function is to locate the discourse within Śānti Parva’s Āpaddharma material and to name the chapter’s topic as the account of the sword’s origin.
The text is closing a chapter: it signals that the chapter dealing with the narration of how the sword came into being has concluded within the Āpaddharma portion of Śānti Parva.
