Thus, in the Śrī Mahābhārata, within the Śānti Parva, in the section on conduct in times of distress (Āpaddharma), ends the one-hundred-and-fifty-eighth chapter, which treats of the faults that lie at the root of calamity. (Colophon/end-of-chapter notice.)
भीष्म उवाच
This line is a colophon marking the close of a chapter whose theme is the identification of fundamental moral faults (doṣas) that become the root causes of distress (āpada), within the broader teaching on right conduct in emergencies (āpaddharma).
The narrative pauses for a formal end-of-chapter notice: it situates the discourse within the Mahābhārata’s Śānti Parva and specifically the Āpaddharma section, and declares that the chapter on explaining the root-causing faults of calamity has concluded.
