Dama-pradhāna-dharma (Self-restraint as the Root of Dharma) — Śānti-parva 154
न दीर्घरुदितेनायं पुनर्जीवं गमिष्यति । न तो आँसू बहानेसे, न लंबी-लंबी सांस खींचनेसे और न दीर्घकालतक रोनेसे ही यह फिर जी सकेगा
na dīrgharuditena ayaṃ punar jīvaṃ gamiṣyati |
Jambuka said: “This one will not return to life merely through prolonged lamentation. Neither tears, nor heavy sighing, nor long-continued weeping can restore the dead.”
जम्बुक उवाच
Grief expressed as prolonged crying is natural but ineffective in changing death; the ethical counsel is to move from lamentation to steadiness of mind and right action, recognizing impermanence.
Jambuka addresses mourners (or a grieving person) and restrains excessive lamentation, stating that no amount of weeping can revive the deceased, thereby redirecting attention toward composure and dharmic response.
