अहो देहप्रदानेन दर्शितातिथिपूजना
aho deha-pradānena darśitātithi-pūjanā
Bhīṣma said: “Ah! By offering up its own body, the great pigeon has set before me a radiant model of honoring a guest. Therefore I too shall now act only in accordance with dharma, for dharma alone is the highest refuge and final goal. The very dharma I have witnessed in that righteous, excellent bird—such dharma is what I desire for myself as well.”
भीष्म उवाच
Dharma is the highest goal, and true dharma is proven through action—especially through unwavering hospitality and self-sacrifice in protecting and honoring a guest.
Bhīṣma reflects on the exemplary conduct of a noble pigeon who offers its own body to uphold the duty of honoring a guest. Inspired, Bhīṣma resolves to follow the same dharmic standard, affirming dharma as the supreme refuge.
