sañjaya uvāca | vārtikāṇāṃ sakāśāt tu śrutvā duryodhanaṃ hatam | hataśiṣṭās tato rājan kauravāṇāṃ mahārathāḥ ||
Sañjaya said: Having heard from the messengers that Duryodhana had been slain, the great chariot-warriors of the Kauravas—those who still remained after the slaughter—were struck with grief and agitation, O King.
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights the moral and psychological aftermath of violent choices: when a cause rooted in adharma collapses, even the mightiest survivors are left to face grief, disorientation, and the consequences of loyalty to a fallen, unrighteous leadership.
Sañjaya reports to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra that news has arrived—through messengers—that Duryodhana has been killed. The remaining Kaurava great warriors, the few survivors of the carnage, react to this turning point, setting up the ensuing events of the chapter.
