Then, seeing this, they burst into lamentation: “Who will now apportion to us our due share?” Knowing that he was contemplating renunciation, all beings—together with the Pitṛs—cried out in grief, fearing the loss of orderly distribution and the sustaining gift of food.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights the ethical weight of orderly distribution and food-giving (anna-dāna) as a sustaining duty. When a key supporter considers renunciation, dependents—including the ancestral realm (Pitṛs)—fear disruption of dharmic maintenance, showing how personal spiritual choices can affect communal and ritual obligations.
Observers realize that a central figure is considering saṃnyāsa (renunciation). In response, beings along with the Pitṛs lament, asking who will now properly apportion shares and provide food-gifts, indicating anxiety over the collapse of established support and distribution.
