Balarāma’s Pilgrimage Context
सो<5चिन्तयन्महा भागो जैगीषव्यस्य देवल:
so 'cintayan mahābhāgo jaigīṣavyasya devalaḥ
Vaiśampāyana said: The illustrious Devala, reflecting deeply upon Jaigīṣavya, pondered within himself—his mind turning toward what was right to do in the situation and what course would best accord with dharma.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights the ethical importance of thoughtful deliberation: a wise person does not act impulsively but reflects on the situation and on dharma before proceeding.
Vaiśampāyana narrates that the sage Devala is contemplating Jaigīṣavya—setting up the next action or counsel that will follow from Devala’s reflection.
